Understanding "Speech-ese"



Aphasia

A neurologically based language disorder that causes a loss or impairment of language, most commonly from a stroke. 


Apraxia 

Impaired ability to execute motor speech planning.  The "communication" between the brain and mouth has been affected. 


Articulation

The physical movement and placement of articulators (lips, teeth, tongue, etc...) to produce various speech sounds. 


Auditory Processing

The ability to understand and process spoken language.


Autism

A developmental disorder that occurs in childhood affecting cognition, communication and social skills.  


CVA

Cerebral Vascular Attack or Stroke caused when a blood vessel becomes blocked or bursts. 


Dysarthria

A neurologically based speech disorder resulting in poor muscle control or muscle weakness.


Dysphagia

Difficulty swallowing from when the food enters the mouth till it reaches the stomach. 


Expressive Language 

The ability to successfully express thoughts, wants and needs.  Language can be expressed through oral communication, sign language, written word or computerized output.  


GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic acid reflux which requires treatment.


Occupational Therapy (OT)

Services provided to encourage patients to complete meaningful activities such as cooking, getting dressed and that have been affected by a physical or mental impairment. 


Oral Motor Function

The functionality, movement, and range of motion related to the patient's lips, tongue, cheeks, jaw, and palate for speech and swallowing needs.  


Physical Therapy (PT)

Services provided to restore movement and physical function to those affected by an injury, disorder or disease. 


Pragmatics

The relationship between words and their meaning in context/social settings. 


Receptive Language 

The ability to comprehend and understand language that is received.  


Speech and Language Delay

Generalized impairment/delay in developing speech and language skills compared to peers.   A common childhood diagnosis that frequently responds well to speech therapy intervention.  Also referred to as Speech and Language Impairment (SLI) or Language Learning Delay (LLD). 


Speech and Language Pathology (ST)

Services provided for various disorders that affect communication or cognition such as stuttering, a lisp or thought processing. 


Telehealth/Telepractice

Medical services provided through telecommunications technology.  At ReImagine Speech and Language Therapy, we use live videoconferencing and previously recorded videoconferencing to complete patient specific treatment plans.
